FAQs
Will my wood get wet with this open design?
Short answer is yes, and frequently. Expect your wood to get damp when it rains. But with this open-air design, we actually find our wood stores to stay extremely dry and can actually outperform closed up wood sheds for wood moisture content levels. When wood is stored in our units, they see a lot of cross breeze and light that aids in the drying process. We find that that a day or two after a heavy rain we can still achieve easy light fires with wood pulled from our personal Cella di Miele. If you have the option to position your unit north/south, you will maximize the amount of light hitting your wood but is not necessary. Constant air flow is ultimately what will dry your wood stores most effectively.
What Materials Do You Use?
We are very versatile and have a good understanding of basic metallurgy to be decerning about material selection for your project. All of our materials are sourced from US mills and US steel suppliers. All materials selected are strong enough to defy gravity in some of our design layouts (please see our flagship unit, the Cella di Miele)
A36 Steel - We use HRS (hot rolled steel) as our standard selected material because of its robustness, strength, and corrosion properties. We purposely select A36 alloy and play to its strengths as a material. Due to the mill process of manufacturing this material, it comes with a nice thick layer of millscale (an iron oxide similar to rust). This base material is designed to patina and rust naturally outdoors and is guaranteed to last 20 years without expensive coatings or paints. It can take up to year to build a nice patina and oxide barrier. (please understand rusting is designed into our product, it is meant to rust and is not a quality concern.)
A588 CORTEN Steel – This is an upgrade material and is known in industry as a “weathering steel”. It is designed to rust almost immediately when exposed to water/oxygen. It will build a rich orange/reddish/brown patina within a month of exposure outdoors. This thick oxide barrier actually protects the base material from further corrosion. This material is often selected for bridges and building fascia’s for its aesthetics.
304L Stainless – This is an upgrade material and the benchmark for corrosion resistance. It is the most common industrial selected stainless material. This is a very costly material option, but is guaranteed to last for, well… essentially forever.
Wood- We select footers of the units based on their uses. If you select a unit for outdoors, we will recommend and provide pressure treated timbers as a standard item (can be upgraded to oak or maple upon request). If you select an indoor unit, we can provide a variety of premium or exotic wood footers that will look best by your fireplace.
What Are The Certifications That Allow You To Produce These Products?
We at IgneoFab are welding experts. Our welding team holds welding certifications ranging from AWS D1.1 and D1.3 Structural Steel, D1.6 Structural Stainless, to NAVSEA MIL-STD-278 in welding processes GMAW(MIG), GTAW(TIG), and FCAW(flux-core). We bring many years of industry expertise to the table to make a truly unique and captivating product to the market.
Can a customer request special changes and or custom requests?
Absolutely! If you have a special design that we currently do not offer, we can make your dream a reality. We are constantly expanding our product line and would love the challenge! We pride ourselves on difficult projects. Please download and print out the custom layout sheet (See bottom of this page) to play with designing your own layout of hexagon cells! There is no limit to how large your unit can be. The 3 unit is welded solid, but the Cella di Miele is actually modular with bolted connections of 2 and 3 cell sub assemblies (for shipping logistics)
How Fast Can A New Order be Made?
Everything we make is custom made to customer specifications. Current lead times for smaller units (3 cell or single) is two weeks. Large units (like our Cella di Miele) or custom layout units are up to month. A lot of time is spent to make sure these are constructed properly for complete customer satisfaction. Quality will always precede production at Igneofab, so if your order takes longer than expected, rest assured it being made right.
Can I order my unit painted or powder coated?
Yes. Please inquire for special options
Can I paint my unit once it arrives?
Yes, we recommend Rustoleum primer/top coat or a beeswax steel treatment.
Isnt rust bad?
Please understand rusting is designed into our product, it is meant to rust and patina naturally and is not a quality concern. We use HEAVY gauge material that is guaranteed to last 20 years. This is not your thin wall truck panel that’s will rust through in 3 winters. We select heavy 12ga sheet and 1/8” stock as standard.
How much wood can it store?
The volume of our Big Seven” unit can store roughly a half cord of wood. Our standard 3 cell unit can store almost ¼ cord of wood. A cord of wood is 128cuft.
Is it safe to handle?
These units are typically bare steel and can pose a small risk of tetanus if you get scratched by it. We try our hardest to deburr after all cutting and welding processes to insure you are getting a safe product, but due to the design, these units have sharp unforgiving corners if you bump into it. We recommend using leather drivers gloves to handle and store wood to minimize the risk of injury.
Is it safe to have with kids?
While it looks easy to push over, these units weigh a ton, literally. The large 7 can weigh as much as 4,000lbs when completely filled with hardwood. Due to this, there is significant risk to crushing injury if accidentally knocked over with a car. We have designed wood footers that are standard on all floor based models to help lower its center of gravity and increase its stability. These wood footers are secured with heavy duty lag bolts.
How do I receive the item?
Due to the size, everything is shipped freight. Lower 48 states - A 3 unit is roughly $80 and a seven unit is roughly $180. Shipping via liftgate truck. Local pickup is free. IgneoFab can offer trailer delivery to the state of NC for a nominal fee.
